Up In The Air
The World War I Diaries of Balloonist Cyril Gordon Jones
6th Oct 1917 contd
Visited No 36 Section and found everything all right. Went to Nos 9 and 47 with Sutcliffe.
Neame arrived and spent night.
7th October 1917
Windy wet day. Balloons up in morning but no view.
Large shell fell on No 9’s balloon during the night, but balloon was on winch at the time and no damage done, except to screen.
Took Neame to No 36 and inspected their winch P90 and examined winch driver as to difficulties in letting up in high winds, which was probably due to lack on compression in engine.
Went to No 9 and showed Neame their Wind Screen, and explained working of it.
Called at No 47 Sectn. BMS 127 (No 18) badly holed by bomb and deflated. BMS 179 inflated with 179 tubes.
Visited No 32 and discussed new balloon bed at Canteen Corner.
